“USS Gerald R Ford Deployed in Anti-Drug Efforts”

In a significant escalation of the US anti-drug efforts, President Donald Trump has initiated a new phase by deploying the USS Gerald R Ford, recognized as the world’s largest warship, to the Caribbean Sea. The US military has taken action against multiple vessels suspected of involvement in illicit drug trafficking in the region. President Trump has directly accused Venezuela’s President Nicolas Maduro of leading drug-trafficking organizations, an accusation firmly denied by Maduro, who in turn has criticized the US for allegedly fabricating a conflict situation.

The ongoing tensions between the United States and Venezuela are at a critical point, with the US refusing to acknowledge Maduro as the legitimate leader of Venezuela, questioning the transparency of the last presidential election in 2024.

Amidst these developments, the deployment of the USS Gerald R Ford has raised concerns about a potential shift in the US-Venezuela dynamics, as the warship’s capabilities enable the possibility of land operations. President Trump hinted at a potential land-based approach, emphasizing control over sea territories.

The Pentagon recently disclosed the deployment of the massive USS Gerald R Ford to the US Southern Command area, encompassing the Caribbean, South America, and Central America. The warship, measuring a remarkable 334 meters in length, with a width of 78 meters and a displacement of 100,000 tonnes, is the largest operational vessel globally. Boasting a crew capacity of 4,600 personnel and accommodation for up to 90 aircraft, the USS Gerald R Ford is equipped with advanced technologies, including two nuclear reactors for enhanced power efficiency compared to conventional Navy vessels.

Notably, the warship’s electromagnetic aircraft launch system (EMALS) utilizes magnetic technology for aircraft launch operations, enabling the deployment of heavier aircraft carrying more fuel and weaponry. The USS Gerald R Ford is armed with a variety of missiles, including air-to-air, anti-ship, and air-to-ground capabilities, with a maximum combat range of approximately 2,000 kilometers. Additionally, the warship accommodates cargo, passenger, and electronic warfare aircraft alongside helicopters, maintaining a top speed of 35 miles per hour.

Despite its impressive features, the USS Gerald R Ford does not carry the latest F-35C fighter jets of the US Navy. However, it operates alongside a carrier strike group for defensive support, consisting of a cruiser, a supply ship, and at least two destroyers.

With a construction cost of $13.3 billion (over £9 billion), the USS Gerald R Ford holds the distinction of being the most expensive warship globally. Commissioned in 2017, the warship began its first deployment in 2022, marking a significant chapter in US military operations in the region.
