The founder of the popular pub chain Wetherspoons has expressed concerns about the ongoing tax disparity between pubs and supermarkets, highlighting the challenges faced by the hospitality sector. Meanwhile, Rachel Reeves is set to announce specific support measures for pubs.
The Chancellor is expected to introduce a relief package worth approximately £300 million to assist pubs in adjusting to the conclusion of pandemic-related financial aid. This relief is likely to focus on alleviating the pressure of high business rates. However, Tim Martin, the chairman of JD Wetherspoon, emphasized that pubs are also grappling with competitive pricing strategies from grocery stores.
Martin urged the Chancellor to level the playing field by addressing the differential tax treatment between pubs and supermarkets. He pointed out that while pubs are subject to a 20% VAT on food sales, supermarkets pay no VAT on food. He stressed that failing to achieve equality in taxation could lead to a decline in pubs compared to supermarkets.
The call for fair treatment comes as Rachel Reeves acknowledged the challenges faced by publicans, especially concerning the anticipated increase in business rates. The Mirror has been actively supporting local pubs through its ongoing campaign “Your Pub Needs You.”
Reeves, speaking from the World Economic Forum in Davos, mentioned her collaboration with the pub sector to ensure appropriate support measures. She noted that the government has already permanently reduced rates for retail, hospitality, and leisure businesses.
However, the perceived special treatment for pubs has sparked demands for similar assistance from other sectors. Jon Collins, the CEO of LIVE representing music and entertainment venues, criticized the selective support, highlighting the adverse impact on venues facing substantial business rates hikes.
Darsh Shah from advisory firm Blick Rothenberg advocated for extending the relief fund, currently assisting pubs with rising business rates, to include hotels facing similar challenges. He emphasized the importance of easing the financial burden on hotels dealing with significant increases in operating costs.
Overall, the push for equitable treatment across different sectors reflects concerns about maintaining a level playing field and supporting businesses facing financial pressures.
