An acclaimed B&B and café has shut down, dealing a heavy blow to the community. The owner attributed the closure to the establishment’s challenging location, which resulted in limited foot traffic.
The Dove Inn, a gluten-free café and B&B located in Alburgh, Norfolk, ceased operations on Friday after a successful two and a half years of serving what the proprietor, Sonya Resemblance, referred to as “beautiful people.” This information was reported by The Sun.
This closure is part of a larger trend affecting the pub and hospitality industry in Britain, with numerous establishments closing annually due to escalating expenses and evolving consumer behaviors.
For instance, the popular White Horse on London End in Beaconsfield recently shut down permanently. Pub owners had previously cautioned about the industry’s decline, citing exorbitant cost increases. In the first quarter of 2025 alone, 300 pubs closed their doors.
Despite being recognized as one of the UK’s top 50 cafes at the 2025 Small Business Awards shortly before its closure, The Dove Inn succumbed to the challenges. Sonya Resemblance, who took over the inn in July 2023, offered a range of meals, including brunch, lunch, and sought-after Sunday roasts, all while contributing to job creation, training opportunities, and mental well-being initiatives.
The establishment also received two Norfolk awards at Luxlife Magazine’s Food and Drink Awards, winning titles for Emerging Hospitality Business of the Year and B&B and Pub of the Year.
A noteworthy aspect of The Dove Inn was its completely gluten-free menu, a feature that Sonya took great pride in, catering to individuals with dietary restrictions.
In an announcement regarding the closure, Sonya expressed gratitude to patrons for their support, acknowledging the joy of serving and interacting with customers over the years.
She highlighted the business’s positive impact on the community, emphasizing the creation of employment opportunities and the provision of essential social spaces that promote mental health.
However, despite efforts to sustain the business, Sonya ultimately attributed the closure to the challenging location. The decision was made following a period of financial struggle exacerbated by broader economic challenges affecting the retail and hospitality sectors.
Despite the outpouring of support from loyal customers in a last-minute attempt to salvage the business, Sonya confirmed the closure on Friday, January 16, prompting a wave of heartfelt messages from the community.
One customer expressed regret at the news, appreciating the establishment for providing a welcoming environment and exceptional food, expressing hope for a potential return in the future.
