Rapist and murderer Brian David Steckel, despite receiving a lethal injection, was able to communicate coherently for several minutes. The 36-year-old American, convicted of the brutal rape and murder of Sandra Lee Long, remained composed while conversing with family and witnesses in his final moments, even as a combination of lethal drugs flowed through his system.
Witnesses to the execution reported hearing distinct sounds from the injection machine and observed convulsions, indicating a possible failure of the intended drug effects. Delaware officials, however, asserted that the execution proceeded as planned, attributing the extended duration to Steckel’s final statements.
In his parting words, Steckel expressed regret and resignation, stating, “I walked in here without a fight, and I accept my punishment. It is time to go. I love you people… I’m at peace.” Steckel’s conviction stemmed from the tragic 1994 rape and murder of Sandra Lee Long in Wilmington, Delaware.
In a horrific turn of events, Steckel enticed Long into her apartment under false pretenses, leading to a violent assault when she rejected his advances. Following the assault, Steckel set Long and the room ablaze, resulting in her death from smoke inhalation and severe burns across 60% of her body.
After the heinous crime, Steckel continued his disturbing behavior by taunting authorities as the self-proclaimed “Driftwood Killer,” making threats to a potential victim and local media. He was eventually apprehended while intoxicated on a harassment warrant, admitting to the murder the next day.
At his trial, Steckel was found guilty of multiple first-degree murder charges and sentenced to death. During the trial phase, he acknowledged his wrongdoing, appealing to the jury to hold him accountable for his reprehensible actions.
