A man, aged 111, has shared the key to his remarkable longevity – a combination of wine and sweets. Zhan Changcheng, residing in Wanyao Village south of Shanghai, China, was born on 17 March 1914. Despite living through significant historical events and 76 years under communist rule, Zhan remains active, engaging in walks and card games with friends.
Zhan, a father of nine, with three sons and six daughters aged between 59 and 82, lives with four generations of his family under one roof. His sons, aged 72 and 69, along with their partners, take turns caring for him. Known for his meticulous hygiene habits and appearance, Zhan diligently brushes his teeth thrice daily and rises at 5 am, awaiting breakfast after a morning stroll in the garden.
His family describes him as particular about food, insisting on sweetened dishes, including his white rice. Despite his fondness for sugary treats, Zhan maintains good health according to regular check-ups, including stable blood sugar levels. Zhan, a former heavy smoker who quit due to family pressure, still carries cigarettes to offer acquaintances.
An accomplished bamboo weaver for over 50 years, Zhan mentored many apprentices in the craft. He continues to meet with weaving enthusiasts in Pingyang County, emphasizing the significance of wine in his daily routine. Leading a modest lifestyle, Zhan is content with simple pleasures, highlighting his preference for a basic diet and minimalistic living.
Wanyao Village boasts 22 residents aged over 90, with two surpassing the century mark. Zhan, the second oldest person in China, is only eclipsed by Zhou Renqing, set to turn 112 on 7 November.
