A man from the UK faces a potential 20-year prison sentence after being convicted of murdering another man during a drug-fueled encounter. Aaron Rainbow, a helicopter pilot hailing from Surrey, was found guilty by a jury of violently and intentionally stabbing Oscar Tornero multiple times after they had consumed crystal meth and GHB together.
Rainbow had initially claimed self-defense, stating that he felt overwhelmed and paranoid due to the drugs they had taken before the incident occurred at Tornero’s residence in Vallgorguina, near the Catalan capital. Despite testifying that he felt disconnected from the events, Rainbow admitted to arming himself with a knife out of fear for his safety, although he could not recall the specific details of the stabbing.
Oscar, who worked in a fashion store and as an escort, was discovered severely injured by a neighbor attempting to escape the scene on the day of the fatal attack. The prosecution argued that Rainbow and Tornero had arranged to meet for drug-infused sexual activities, which escalated into a violent altercation resulting in Tornero’s death.
Following the jury’s decision, the state prosecutor increased the prison sentence request to 20 years, aligning with the victim’s family’s desires for justice. Rainbow’s defense attorney had argued for his acquittal, citing temporary insanity and fear-induced actions as mitigating factors during the trial.
Rainbow’s family raised concerns about the investigation, likening the case to a suspenseful drama and alleging mishandling of evidence by Spanish authorities. Despite these claims, Rainbow was found guilty by an 8-1 vote. The final sentencing will be determined at a later date, taking into account the time he has already spent in custody since his arrest.
