A wicked nursery school teacher committed the heinous act of sexually assaulting her partner’s 4-year-old daughter, leading to the child’s tragic drowning in a bathtub. The perpetrator, identified as Amber Lee Hughes, carried out the assault and murder of Nada-Jane Chalita on January 23, 2023, while the child’s father, Elie, was away for a job interview.
Prior to the horrific incident, Hughes expressed anger over perceived infidelity by Elie, sending a chilling message indicating her intent for retaliation. Subsequently, Hughes forced Nada-Jane into the bathtub and sat on her until she met her untimely demise. Autopsy results also revealed that the child had been sexually assaulted on two occasions before her death.
During the trial at South Africa’s Johannesburg High Court, Hughes admitted to suffering from borderline personality disorder but acknowledged full awareness of her actions on the day of the incident. She attributed the event to a dispute with Elie regarding his alleged infidelity and claimed she left the child unattended in the bathtub with the water running after she became unresponsive.
Hughes, who made several suicide attempts following the murder, cited her troubled childhood and mental health issues as contributing factors to her behavior. Testimony from a social worker highlighted Hughes’ history of being bullied and her struggles with suicidal thoughts. Despite expressing remorse for her actions, the court determined that the murder was premeditated based on evidence, including threatening messages sent by Hughes before the crime.
The court proceedings revealed that Hughes entered a tumultuous relationship with Elie in 2021, during which she displayed threatening behavior towards Nada-Jane. In August, Hughes was found guilty of premeditated murder and vaginal rape, offenses punishable by life imprisonment. Elie, devastated by the loss of his child, expressed that no sentence would ever bring him the justice he seeks.
