MPs Urge Chancellor: Raise Taxes on Online Gambling

Rachel Reeves is under pressure to ignore concerns from the industry and reveal potential tax increases for gambling in the upcoming Budget. A prominent group of MPs is advising the Chancellor to move forward with penalties for companies profiting significantly from gambling activities, which they claim are causing substantial harm.

In a recent report, the Treasury Committee acknowledged that while many individuals engage in safe gambling practices at traditional venues like arcades and bingo halls, there is a concerning shift towards online gambling that promotes addictive and harmful behavior without providing any real benefits to individuals, families, or communities.

The committee rejected the industry’s argument that gambling has no negative social impact and emphasized the detrimental effects of online betting games on individuals and their surroundings. Dame Meg Hillier, the committee chair, highlighted the industry’s concealment of the harmful aspects of online gambling behind a facade of tradition and culture.

The report revealed a significant increase in profits for online gambling operators over the past decade, reaching £6.9 billion annually. To address this, the committee recommends raising the remote gaming duty and machine games duty to levels higher than those imposed on casino clubs. However, such actions could lead to pushback from bookmakers, who argue that higher online taxes would reduce their overall revenue, affecting their physical establishments.

Critics have also raised concerns that an increase in machine games duty could negatively impact businesses such as seaside arcades, pubs, and bingo halls that host slot machines. Additionally, MPs are urging the government to counter industry claims that tax hikes might drive consumers towards unregulated black market betting operators.

Former Prime Minister Gordon Brown has previously supported calls for higher taxes on gambling firms to generate revenue for social welfare programs. There is speculation that Rachel Reeves may exempt horse racing from the proposed tax increases on gambling activities.
