“TfL Rejects Women-Only Carriage Proposal Amid Safety Concerns”

Transport for London (TfL) has provided an update in response to a recent push for the implementation of women-only tube carriages on the London Underground. The initiative was spearheaded by Camille Brown, a 21-year-old student at UCL, who garnered over 9,500 signatures on a petition urging Sadiq Khan and TfL to introduce at least one women-only carriage on every tube line.

Despite the growing support for the campaign, TfL has clarified that they currently have no intentions to introduce segregated carriages for women. Siwan Hayward, TfL’s Director of Security, Policing, and Enforcement, emphasized that while ensuring the safety of all passengers is a priority, isolating women is not the solution to addressing sexual offenses. TfL is collaborating with law enforcement to enhance security measures on the network, focusing on intelligence-led operations to combat offenders and hotspot areas.

TfL disclosed that reported cases of sexual offenses on tubes, trains, and buses in London have increased by more than 10% annually. Between February 2023 and January 2024, 2,671 sexual offenses were reported to the police. This surge in reported incidents coincided with a rise in overall passenger numbers as the city underwent post-pandemic recovery.

Research conducted by the British Transport Police and Girlguiding revealed alarming statistics regarding sexual harassment on public transportation. A significant portion of women, including young individuals, expressed feelings of insecurity while commuting alone. Camille Brown highlighted the persistent issue of public harassment on the London Underground in her petition, calling for a reevaluation of TfL’s current strategies.

Efforts to address and prevent sexual harassment on public transport continue to be a focal point for TfL and law enforcement agencies. Passenger safety remains a top priority, and TfL encourages individuals to report any incidents of harassment to the authorities or staff members for prompt action and prevention measures.
