“Waterloo Researcher Wins Ig Nobel for Splash-less Urinal”

University of Waterloo doctoral candidate Kaveeshan Thurairajah, while not a Nobel Prize winner, was awarded an Ig Nobel Prize, a comical spin on the prestigious Nobel Prizes that recognizes quirky and inventive research endeavors. Thurairajah and his team secured the Ig Nobel Physics Prize for their work on creating a urinal that prevents splashing. The moment of victory was shared over wine in espresso cups with his supervisor, fluid physicist Zhao Pan.

The researchers developed various urinal prototypes, such as the Nautilus and Cornucopia designs, to find an effective solution. The Nautilus design was preferred for its reduced splash and ease of cleaning compared to the Cornucopia model. The team, donned in yellow raincoats, attended the awards ceremony in Zurich to receive their accolade, emphasizing that no actual pee was involved in their experiments.

Thurairajah highlighted the practical importance of their research in improving public restroom facilities. The study’s outcomes were published in the journal PNAS Nexus. At the same event, Canadian researchers from the University of Toronto and McGill University were recognized for their studies on unethical behavior and innovative use of mosquito proboscises in 3D printing, respectively.

The Ig Nobel Awards, managed by Annals of Improbable Research, transitioned to Europe after being held in the United States for 35 years due to visa concerns. Thurairajah, stressing the international nature of science, supported the decision, noting the importance of a global scientific community.
