“US Man Convicted of Brutal Murder Mistaken for Bear Attack”

An individual from the United States associated with white supremacist groups has been convicted of a particularly brutal murder initially mistaken for a bear attack.

Daren Christopher Abbey was found guilty of the vicious killing of Dustin Kjersem using an axe, wood block, and screwdriver in October 2024. The crime took place at Dustin’s campsite near Big Sky, Montana, where his body was later discovered by his girlfriend and a friend.

Initially, authorities were led to believe it was a bear attack, but further investigation by wildlife agents ruled out animal involvement after no traces were found in the vicinity. Abbey was linked to the crime scene when his DNA was identified on a beer can inside Dustin’s tent.

Abbey claimed he intended to spend the night at the campsite and was welcomed by Dustin, whom he did not know, according to Gallatin County Sheriff Dan Springer. Initially alleging self-defense after an attack by Dustin, Abbey’s story was doubted by prosecutors due to inconsistencies and the severe chop wounds inflicted on Dustin during the assault.

Subsequently, Abbey confessed to stealing Kjersem’s belongings and attempting to cover up the evidence post-murder. Following a six-day trial, Abbey was convicted of deliberate homicide and evidence tampering. He opted not to testify in his defense.

While the charges carry the possibility of a death penalty in Montana, prosecutors have opted not to pursue capital punishment in this instance, as per Jack Veil from the Gallatin County Attorney’s Office.

Abbey’s defense lawyer, Sarah Kottke, mentioned that Abbey will decide on appealing the conviction after the sentencing on December 30, citing the challenges of presenting an affirmative defense in a remote location without witnesses.

Prior documentation from Gallatin County indicated Abbey’s association with a white supremacist group, with State Department of Corrections records revealing tattoos of a swastika and an iron cross on him.

Dustin, a self-employed contractor involved in home construction and other trades, was a father of two, as noted by his sister.
