Renowned snooker commentator John Virgo has passed away at the age of 79. Virgo, known as a prominent figure in snooker commentary, made his final appearance on the BBC during last month’s Masters tournament. Born in Salford, he had a successful career as a player, winning the UK Championship in 1979. Virgo died in Spain, where he resided.
The World Seniors Snooker chairman, Jason Francis, confirmed Virgo’s passing on social media, expressing his deepest condolences to Virgo’s family. Virgo was cherished for his dedication to the sport and his engaging commentary style, which endeared him to fans and players alike.
The BBC and the World Snooker Tour also paid tribute to Virgo, acknowledging his significant contributions to the sport. Colleagues and fellow players, including Ronnie O’Sullivan, Stephen Hendry, Shaun Murphy, and Neil Robertson, shared heartfelt messages honoring Virgo’s legacy and friendship.
Virgo retired from playing in 1994 to pursue a career in commentary, becoming one of the most iconic voices in snooker. Known for his signature catchphrase, “Where’s the cue ball going?” and his flamboyant style, Virgo left a lasting impact on the sport. He was inducted into the World Snooker Tour Hall of Fame in recognition of his achievements.
Virgo’s influence extended beyond the commentary box, as he co-hosted the popular BBC snooker program, Big Break, alongside Jim Davidson. Reflecting on their successful partnership, Virgo highlighted the chemistry between their contrasting personalities and praised Davidson’s humor and generosity.
In his later years, Virgo moved to Spain with his wife, Rosie Ries, seeking relief from a neck injury. He candidly discussed his gambling addiction in a 2017 interview, leaving behind a legacy that transcends the world of snooker. Survived by his son, Gary, and daughter, Brook-Leah, from previous marriages, Virgo’s impact on the sport and his colorful persona will be deeply missed.
