A tragic incident occurred today when a helicopter transporting Russian defense plant officials crashed in flames onto a private residence, resulting in the deaths of four individuals on board. Three survivors were rescued from the Ka-226 helicopter and swiftly taken to a hospital in Russia, with one reported to be in critical condition. The helicopter was carrying high-ranking personnel from Kizlyar Electromechanical Plant, a company involved in the production of ground control systems for military aircraft, including Sukhoi and MiG models, and has faced sanctions due to its involvement in the conflict in Ukraine.
The exact cause of the crash, described as a “catastrophe” by the Russian Federal Air Transport Agency, remains unknown. The incident took place in the village of Achi-Su in Dagestan, where locals witnessed the helicopter circling in flames as it seemingly searched for a safe spot to make an emergency landing before ultimately crashing into a house.
Fortunately, no casualties were reported on the ground, although witnesses observed the aircraft plummeting and exploding near the Zhemchuzhina recreation center by the Caspian Sea. Initial reports incorrectly indicated that it was a tourist helicopter, but subsequent information clarified that defense plant personnel were aboard the flight. Israfil Israfilov, the head of the Dagestan Regional Control Center, confirmed the absence of tourists on the helicopter and emphasized that the circumstances surrounding the crash are under investigation.
The Ka-226 helicopter is commonly used by the Russian military, national guard, and defense industry enterprises. The ill-fated flight was en route from Kizlyar to Izberbash on the Caspian Sea at the time of the accident. Efforts are underway to clear the wreckage promptly to determine the root cause of the crash, with a technical malfunction being considered as a probable factor, according to news agency TASS.
Footage from security cameras captured the harrowing moment of the helicopter crashing and igniting into flames, showing a man fleeing the scene, presumably seeking assistance. One witness described how the helicopter’s tail wing grazed a pier during an attempted landing, then ascended briefly before crashing near a beachside house, triggering an explosion upon impact.
