The debut of the Ontario Honda Dealers Indy at Markham encountered a setback during the initial stage. The practice and qualifying sessions for the sole IndyCar event in Canada were called off on Friday due to the unfinished track, preventing officials from conducting a final safety check. Organizers plan to accommodate all missed track sessions from the first day into Saturday’s schedule.
This year marks Markham’s first time hosting the event, which was relocated from Toronto’s Exhibition Place, its home since its inception in 1986. IndyCar president J. Douglas Boles expressed disappointment over the delay, citing the significant efforts made by the team on-site to assist the promoter in completing the track build on time.
Long-time race attendees Mark Coburn from Kitchener, Ont., and Scott Stobo from Waterloo, Ont., shared mixed sentiments about the postponement of practice and qualifying. They emphasized the importance of ensuring a safe track for all participants and spectators, while acknowledging the inconvenience caused by the last-minute cancellations.
The move from downtown Toronto to Markham was announced by IndyCar and the City of Markham in September. The newly constructed temporary circuit spans between Kennedy Road, Enterprise Boulevard, the Unionville GO tracks, and Highway 407. Despite some incomplete features such as a pedestrian bridge and safety fencing adjustments, the event received substantial funding from the Ontario and federal governments as well as the city of Markham.
The race weekend attracted numerous fans to the Markham track, where temperatures soared as high as 31°C with humidity. Despite the lack of shade and seating options, off-track activities proceeded as scheduled, including driver autograph sessions. Saturday’s schedule includes multiple practice sessions and the qualifying round, with additional races scheduled throughout the weekend.
IndyCar officials remain optimistic about the circuit’s potential, praising the city of Markham for its support in creating a challenging and entertaining track layout. Various racing series, including the USF2000 Championship and NASCAR Canada Series, will also feature races during the event.
Reflecting on the eventful day, Stobo hinted at potential future visits while acknowledging the unique experience of the current location in Markham.
