Nick Reiner, facing allegations of murdering his parents, Rob Reiner and Michele Singer Reiner, has been refused access to the $1.5 million US trust fund he had sought to utilize for his legal defense. In a June submission, Reiner had been attempting to claim supposedly unpaid funds from a trust set up by his parents in 1993.
Court documents obtained by CBC News revealed that trustees turned down Reiner’s request for the funds, citing a section of California law called the “slayer statute,” which bars individuals from inheriting assets from someone they have intentionally killed. Rob Reiner, a renowned director and actor, and his wife Michele were fatally stabbed in their California residence on December 14, 2025, with their son Nick Reiner being arrested shortly after. The 32-year-old was formally charged with murder on July 20, maintaining his innocence.
The indictment by a Los Angeles County grand jury, unveiled recently, alleges that Reiner premeditated the attack on his parents. This critical detail, among other circumstances, could potentially lead to the death penalty. District Attorney Nathan Hochman has not yet confirmed whether this penalty will be pursued.
Reiner is set to appear in court for a pretrial hearing in September, with public defender Kimberly Greene currently representing him. The June filing disclosed that besides the main family trust fund, individual trust funds were established for each of the Reiner children, with Nick Reiner entitled to receive half at 30 and the remainder at 35. However, he asserted in his petition that he had not received the funds due to him at 30, alleging that the trustees were withholding his lawful entitlement.
A high-profile attorney, Alan Jackson, was initially retained to represent Reiner but left the case abruptly. Reiner’s siblings, Jake and Romy Reiner, initially agreed to cover his legal expenses but later rescinded this offer. Jackson expressed willingness to rejoin the case if funding became available.
Legal representatives overseeing the trust fund, Paul R. Kanin and Jodi Pais Montgomery, concurred in court documents that funds could not be disbursed due to the pending criminal case against Reiner. They emphasized that until the outcome of the criminal proceedings is determined, access to the trust fund remains restricted. Motives behind the killings remain undisclosed, with Jake Reiner expressing the challenges of coping with his parents’ tragic deaths and the intense scrutiny surrounding his brother’s involvement in the case.
