“Murder of Karabo Mokoena Sparks #JusticeForKarabo Movement”

Karabo Mokoena, a young woman from South Africa, was tragically murdered in 2017, sparking widespread outrage and shedding light on the country’s issue of gender-based violence. Karabo, described as vibrant and driven, hailed from Johannesburg and was cherished for her warmth and spirituality by those close to her.

In a relationship with Sandile Mantsoe, a seemingly confident and caring businessman, Karabo faced emotional abuse behind closed doors. Her disappearance on April 27, 2017, led to a frantic search initiated by her family and friends, who shared her images online using the hashtag #FindKarabo.

The search culminated in a heartbreaking discovery two days later when the police found Karabo’s body in a shallow grave in Lyndhurst, Johannesburg. She had suffered brutal beatings, been doused in acid, and set on fire in an attempt to conceal the heinous crime.

Sandile Mantsoe, her boyfriend, was identified as the perpetrator. Investigations uncovered that Mantsoe murdered Karabo in his Sandton apartment after a heated argument, with evidence suggesting he physically assaulted and strangled her before enlisting help to dispose of her body.

During the trial, it was revealed how Mantsoe had subjected Karabo to emotional and physical abuse throughout their relationship. Despite her friends noticing bruises and her desire to leave him, Karabo remained hopeful for change.

In May 2018, Mantsoe was found guilty of murder, assault causing grievous bodily harm, and obstructing justice, receiving a 32-year prison sentence. The court rejected his claim that Karabo took her own life, presenting compelling forensic evidence and eyewitness testimonies.

The sentencing was met with a mix of emotions, as Mantsoe appeared composed and even smiled when interacting with family and media during court breaks. Activists and mourners outside the South Gauteng High Court demanded justice for Karabo and all victims of femicide, highlighting the pervasive issue of gender-based violence in South Africa.

Karabo Mokoena’s tragic death became a symbol of the country’s epidemic of gender-based violence, sparking the #JusticeForKarabo movement that called for reforms, stronger protections for women, and harsher penalties for domestic violence offenders. The campaign evolved into a national conversation, prompting vigils, debates, and renewed advocacy efforts by political leaders and civil society groups.
