Macklemore is set to embark on his own tour following his removal as an opening act for Ed Sheeran’s U.S. tour leg. The decision came after venue owners in the U.S. threatened to cancel Sheeran’s shows if Macklemore continued as his opener, as reported by Messina Touring Group to Rolling Stone magazine.
Expressing his pro-Palestinian stance, Macklemore has been vocal about his support for Palestinians for some time, including recent statements during performances and on social media. Following his removal from Sheeran’s tour, the rapper took to Instagram to share his thoughts on the situation, emphasizing the importance of paying attention to the influence of the wealthy class on artistic voices.
Announcing the Free Palestine Tour, Macklemore revealed performance dates in Dublin, Paris, and London for October, with additional U.S. dates to be announced. The tour aims to support Palestinian causes, with proceeds benefiting organizations such as Gaza Soup Kitchen, Palestinian Youth Movement, Jewish Voice for Peace, and UNRWA USA.
The controversy surrounding Macklemore’s performances with Sheeran escalated, leading to his official removal from the Loop Tour. In response, the rapper pledged to donate his tour earnings to humanitarian organizations aiding Gaza, challenging billionaire Robert Kraft to do the same. Kraft subsequently pledged $2 million to aid in the region in response to Sheeran’s request.
Meanwhile, Sheeran apologized to fans during his tour without Macklemore, expressing his reluctance to be perceived as an activist musician. The unfolding events highlight the intersection of music, politics, and activism in the entertainment industry.
