Serita Thurton netted two goals in the opening half as the bottom-ranked Calgary Wild caused an upset by defeating the top-ranked Ottawa Rapid 4-3 in Northern Super League action held at McMahon Stadium on Saturday.
Kahli Johnson broke the deadlock in the 15th minute, putting the hosts ahead 1-0, followed by Thurton extending the lead to 2-0 approximately 13 minutes later.
Ottawa’s Jung Min-Young found the back of the net in the 38th minute, with Melanie Forbes equalizing at 2-2 just a minute into first-half injury time.
Just before halftime, Thurton secured her brace, propelling the Wild into the lead for good.
Jorian Baucom also contributed a goal for the Wild, who now hold a record of two wins, 12 losses, and two draws.
Jyllissa Harris converted a penalty in the 86th minute for the Rapid, who now stand at 10 wins, three losses, and three draws, ending their 10-game unbeaten streak.
Despite controlling possession for 54% of the match, the Rapid were outshot by the Wild 16-13 (9-6 on target).
The Wild earned six of the 11 corners in the game, while Ottawa received one yellow card and one red card.
Rise Prevail Over Tides
Jessica De Filippo scored in the 57th minute to level the score before adding a second goal five minutes into stoppage time in the second half, leading the Vancouver Rise to a 2-1 victory over the Halifax Tides at Swangard Stadium in Burnaby, B.C.
Jordyn Rhodes provided the Tides with a 1-0 lead in the 19th minute, but De Filippo’s late heroics secured the win for the fourth-placed Rise.
Jessica De Filippo scored her second goal of the game with just two minutes remaining, giving Vancouver a 2-1 win over Halifax.
The fifth-ranked Rise controlled 56% of possession and outshot the Tides 18-13, with a 6-4 advantage on target.
The Tides earned four of the six corners in the match, while the Rise received two of the three yellow cards issued.
