Hayley O’Rourke, a 39-year-old mother of two from Bristol, balances a full-time HR job at the National Grid while caring for her father, Tony Bullock, 76, who was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s in 2023. Describing her role as a “sandwich carer,” Hayley mentioned the challenges of managing her father’s shifting behavior, including episodes of anger and aggression towards the family.
Over the past two years, Tony’s condition has deteriorated significantly, with Hayley noting a stark contrast in his personality and interactions with family members. Recalling signs of his condition, such as erratic driving and social awkwardness, Hayley shared the relief she felt upon receiving his diagnosis, which shed light on his changing behavior.
To ensure her father’s safety, Hayley took measures like providing him with an AirTag for tracking and obtaining Power of Attorney after a peculiar incident involving an unexpected delivery of snack boxes. She is actively involved in organizing the Forget Me Not spring charity ball to raise funds for the Alzheimer’s Society, emphasizing the emotional toll of witnessing her father’s gradual decline.
