Responding to the accusations, Chen’s office provided evidence that he returned from China on March 22, a day before the alleged voting incident, presenting his boarding pass and visa stamps as proof. They clarified that Chen’s health issues, stemming from a prior vehicle accident, made it challenging for him to travel to Ottawa frequently, leading to his decision to step down.
Chen’s trip to China was part of official parliamentary business with the Canada-China Legislative Association, sponsored by the Hakka Canadian Association. Despite critics questioning his ability to travel to China but not to Ottawa, the trip details were disclosed publicly by the Office of Canada’s Conflict of Interest and Ethics Commissioner.
