“Comedian Income Hit as SiriusXM Shifts to Star-Studded Channel”

Comedian Liz Miele has faced a significant reduction in her income, a situation shared by many others in the industry. SiriusXM recently discontinued its Raw Comedy/Raw Dog channel, which showcased over 800 comedians, replacing it with a channel owned by renowned comedian Sebastian Maniscalco.

This change has left Miele and numerous working-class comedians without a vital income source and platform, as high-profile celebrity comics now dominate the channel. Miele expressed how Sirius XM had been a financial lifeline for her in a tough year, supporting fellow comedians facing various challenges.

While Maniscalco and SiriusXM have pledged to provide opportunities for comedians at different career stages, industry advocates like Stand Up for Standup reveal a different reality. Before the switch, Raw Comedy featured over 800 comedians monthly, each earning $15 in royalties per play. However, the revamped channel only showcased 275 comedians last month, with the top 50 artists receiving over 75% of the plays, including big names like Chris Rock and Kevin Hart.

Miele, a former top performer on the channel, described the current situation as a concentration of wealth benefiting a select few, diminishing opportunities for emerging talents. Toronto comedian Danish Anwar highlighted the financial impact on Canadian comedians, with royalties plummeting by 30 to 40%.

Prominent comedians like Patton Oswalt and Michelle Wolf have urged Maniscalco to support emerging talents and ensure their inclusion on the channel. While Maniscalco denied involvement in the channel’s overhaul, SiriusXM attributed the decision to performance issues.

Anwar emphasized the crucial role of SiriusXM royalties for Canadian comics striving in the U.S., suggesting potential repercussions like returning to Canada due to financial strains. The industry faces challenges of consolidation and emerging technologies, prompting calls for unity and support among comedians.

Overall, the comedy community grapples with the aftermath of SiriusXM’s changes, with uncertainties looming over the future of emerging talents and the industry’s financial landscape.
