Former NBA center Enes Kanter Freedom was removed from the Indiana-Chicago WNBA game on Sunday night after a confrontation with Sky guard Natasha Cloud in the third quarter. Kanter, seated along the baseline, wore a black shirt with the phrase “WOMAN noun. adult human female.”
During a timeout called by the Fever, Cloud scored inside, celebrated with a teammate, and then headed towards Kanter. As Cloud approached, she started yelling and pointing at Kanter, who stood up and extended his arms before security and Sky players intervened.
Chicago forward Azura Stevens stated that there was a fan incident, emphasizing the need to focus on the game. After the altercation, Cloud met with team and league security but did not engage with the media. However, she shared a supportive message for transgender individuals on social media.
The incident has sparked discussions about transgender athletes in the WNBA. While the league’s collective bargaining agreement specifies it is for women, there are no explicit guidelines regarding gender identity or sex assigned at birth. The WNBA has not had a transgender woman player, and debates continue regarding transgender inclusion in women’s sports.
Former NBA players, including Kanter, have jokingly expressed interest in joining the WNBA draft as women. This has led to mixed reactions within the basketball community, with some players and coaches advocating for a focus on the game rather than distractions unrelated to basketball.
The ongoing debate highlights the complex intersection of sports, gender identity, and inclusivity in professional athletics.
