Gary Southgate’s dream has come to life with the launch of Eastend Scenic Rail Tours, offering a picturesque journey through southwest Saskatchewan’s Frenchman River Valley. As a farmer from North Battleford, Sask., Southgate’s passion for preserving the rich history of the region led him to collect and restore old trains, aiming to bring them back into service.
Southgate’s fascination with trains dates back to his childhood, watching steam locomotives pass by. Starting with a 1929 Canadian Pacific Railway steam locomotive, he later focused on acquiring CN equipment to recreate the ambiance of the classic Super Continental passenger trains. His collection has grown significantly over the years, with plans to restore and repurpose the rail cars for operational or museum use.
The scenic rail tours have garnered attention, with two of Southgate’s cars featured in the Polar Express films. Despite facing challenges, such as disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, Southgate remains determined to make his venture a success. The tours have received positive feedback from passengers, including railway enthusiasts and tourists from various parts of the world.
With a vision to expand the railway experience, Southgate has invested in facilities like a motel, an RV park, and a museum in Eastend. Despite the hurdles, he remains optimistic about the future and hopes that his efforts will leave a lasting legacy for the community and the broader Canadian heritage.
