Since mid-July, Fisheries and Oceans Canada reported that roughly one million chum salmon have migrated into the Yukon River from the Bering Sea during the fall season. However, experts caution that this surge does not necessarily indicate an overall population increase for this specific salmon species.
In 2020, there was a significant decrease in chum salmon numbers, raising concerns among researchers. Sebastian Jones, a wildlife analyst at the Yukon Conservation Society, expressed worry over the unpredictability of these fluctuations in salmon populations.
The proportion of Canadian-origin salmon in the returning fish population currently stands at around 12%, lower than the typical range of 20-30%. Despite this, there has been a noticeable improvement compared to recent years, according to Jones.
In the previous year, approximately 25,000 chum salmon crossed into Canada, with hopes for a significant increase to 100,000 fish this year. Jones emphasized that the ideal numbers would range between 150,000 and 250,000 chum salmon entering the Yukon.
Stephanie Peacock, a scientist at the Pacific Salmon Foundation, highlighted the importance of chum salmon as one of the two salmon species that return to the Canadian part of the Yukon River, alongside chinook salmon. Peacock noted that chum salmon typically migrate later than chinook and provide vital nutrients in the fall.
Both chinook and chum salmon populations have experienced declines over time, with the decline in chum salmon being particularly concerning due to its rapid pace. Research is ongoing in the Bering Sea, the starting point of the salmon’s journey upstream, to understand the impact of environmental changes such as rising water temperatures and increased industrial fishing.
While there is cautious optimism surrounding the current salmon numbers, Peacock stressed the need to remain vigilant about the long-term decline in Yukon chum salmon populations. The complex ecosystem dynamics and ongoing challenges require continued monitoring and conservation efforts.
