In a nighttime aerial assault that spanned several hours, Russia launched a barrage of missiles and drones at the Ukrainian capital Kyiv and its vicinity, resulting in the death of at least 16 individuals, as per officials’ reports on Thursday.
The assault on Kyiv by Moscow’s forces has escalated in recent months, taking advantage of Ukraine’s limited stock of U.S.-made Patriot air defense interceptors, which are the only weapons capable of intercepting ballistic missiles in its arsenal. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has made appeals for additional Patriot interceptors from other countries, but global supplies are depleted due to ongoing conflicts like the Iran war and Ukraine’s prolonged battle against Russia’s invasion.

As the assault unfolded, Poland’s Armed Forces Operational Command activated its military aviation operations, ground-based air defense systems, and radar reconnaissance. Additionally, Polish and other NATO military aircraft were mobilized for monitoring the airspace, reported the Polish news agency PAP.
Meanwhile, Romania’s Defence Ministry reported an incident where an unidentified drone crashed and caught fire near the border with Ukraine. In a separate event, two Spanish F-18 jets, conducting an air policing mission in Romania, were scrambled to monitor a cluster of “air targets” close to the border.
In response to these hostilities, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha criticized Russia on social media for jeopardizing NATO’s resolve and violating the sovereignty of neighboring nations, thereby escalating risks beyond Ukraine.
Despite the escalating conflict, Ukraine’s quest for missile defense systems remains a challenge, with a significant decline in the U.S. Patriot inventory. Lockheed Martin, a key producer of interceptors, has ramped up production efforts, aiming to boost annual capacity to 2,000 interceptors by 2030.
