“TV Show Mention Boosts Interest in Alberta Heritage Site”

A UNESCO World Heritage Site located in Alberta is experiencing a surge in interest following a mention on a popular American TV series, raising hopes for a busy summer season, according to the site’s marketing director. The site, Head-Smashed-In Buffalo Jump, was featured in an episode of the acclaimed medical drama series, “The Pitt,” where one of the characters, Dr. Michael (Robby) Robinavitch, expresses his intention to visit the landmark situated in the foothills of the Canadian Rocky Mountains.

Head-Smashed-In Buffalo Jump, located approximately 150 kilometers south of Calgary, holds historical significance as it was utilized by Indigenous communities for thousands of years to guide bison herds over a cliff for hunting purposes. The site features an interpretive center constructed within the sandstone cliff, offering insights into Blackfoot culture, local ecology, and archaeological discoveries, along with a trail leading to the cliff top.

Quinton Crow Shoe, the head of marketing at Head-Smashed-In Buffalo Jump, mentioned an increase in visitor interest following the TV show’s reference, attributing it to sparking curiosity among viewers. The mention on the show led to a notable uptick in engagement on their social media and email platforms, indicating a heightened awareness and interest in the site.

Designated as a World Heritage Site in 1981, Head-Smashed-In Buffalo Jump typically welcomes around 60,000 visitors annually. Crow Shoe expressed optimism that the recent surge in interest will result in a rise in visitor numbers and motor coach tours during the peak season from May to September. Additionally, promotional efforts like discounts offered through the national Canada Strong Pass have positively impacted visitor numbers.

Crow Shoe emphasized the collaborative nature of the attractions in southern Alberta, including nearby sites like Writing-on-Stone Provincial Park and Waterton Lakes National Park, which collectively draw visitors to explore the region comprehensively.

The province’s marketing agency, Travel Alberta, capitalized on the TV show’s mention by releasing a promotional video featuring the show’s characters superimposed against the backdrop of Head-Smashed-In Buffalo Jump’s cliffs. Alberta Culture Minister Tanya Fir also shared the TV clip on social media, showcasing the global appeal of Alberta’s history and cultural landmarks.

Overall, the increased interest generated by the TV show’s mention has created a positive buzz around Head-Smashed-In Buffalo Jump, with hopes for sustained visitor engagement and support for the region’s attractions.
