The Canadian government is injecting $100 million into the steel industry through a new initiative that will cover 50% of the expenses for transporting domestically produced steel by ship or rail. Transport Minister Steven MacKinnon unveiled the Commodities Sectoral Support Program in Hamilton as a direct response to U.S. tariffs imposed on Canadian steel, aluminum, copper, and related products.
Emphasizing the critical national significance of Hamilton’s steel sector and producers across Canada, MacKinnon pledged to vigorously support and enhance the industry’s sustainability and growth. The program, effective immediately, will reimburse companies for half of the expenses associated with transporting certified Canadian steel between provinces.
Operating for up to a year or until the allocated $100 million is exhausted, the program allows a maximum rebate of $50 million per producer. MacKinnon hinted at a possible extension if the program runs out of funds prematurely. Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre, campaigning in Quebec, advocated for reducing steel transport costs by extending the gas and diesel excise tax exemption and eliminating the industrial carbon tax.
The initiative aligns with Prime Minister Mark Carney’s economic revitalization strategy to streamline and lower the costs of domestic product shipments. Industry leaders, including Ron Bedard from ArcelorMittal Dofasco, anticipate substantial positive impacts across all provinces due to improved access to affordable Canadian steel. Jason Card from the Chamber of Marine Commerce lauded the program for its role in fortifying supply chains, boosting the national economy, and supporting various steel-related projects nationwide.
