“Poll Shows Ending Two-Child Limit Boosts Labour’s Election Chances”

A recent poll indicates that addressing poverty issues, such as eliminating the two-child limit, could potentially strengthen the Labour Party’s position in the upcoming election. The survey, conducted by Public First on behalf of Save the Children and The UK Committee for UNICEF before the Budget announcement, gathered opinions from individuals with varying voter intentions.

The results highlighted that neglecting child poverty was identified as the factor most likely to harm Labour’s chances of re-election. Chancellor Rachel Reeves declared the end of the controversial two-child limit, a policy that affected over 1.6 million children, based on government data.

Public sentiment favored the decision, especially after understanding the positive impact of lifting the two-child limit and its associated costs. More than half of respondents (55%) expressed a desire for the government to prioritize supporting families with children, making it the most popular choice across all voter intentions. Other top priorities included assisting working individuals facing financial challenges (32%) and people with disabilities (54%).

Commenting on the findings, Meghan Meek-O’Connor, Head of England and Westminster at Save the Children UK, emphasized the public’s support for scrapping the two-child limit as a cost-effective measure to combat child poverty effectively.

Meanwhile, a recent analysis by the UNICEF Global Office of Research and Foresight revealed concerning trends regarding child income poverty in the UK. Between 2013 and 2023, the UK experienced the highest increase in relative child income poverty among 37 high-income countries, rising by 34%. Additionally, the UK witnessed the most substantial surge in deep poverty compared to European Union countries during the same period, increasing by 67%.
