A popular TikTok personality was abducted and publicly killed in front of her family members. Mariam Cissé, known for her substantial following on the social media platform, often shared content showcasing her life in Tonka, a town in the northern region of Timbuktu.
Despite her public support for the military, as evidenced by her videos donning their uniform, Mariam’s content primarily focused on lighthearted and humorous perspectives on living in a politically turbulent environment. She was reportedly taken by a jihadist group during a live stream in a nearby town on November 6, where she was accused of aiding the Malian army by disclosing jihadist movements.
According to her brother, Mariam was captured by the jihadists and subsequently transferred to Tonka, where she was fatally shot in Independence Square. A security source revealed that she was targeted for allegedly filming the jihadists on behalf of the Malian army, branding the act as ‘barbaric’.
The tragic incident has shocked the nation amid ongoing fuel shortages caused by a terrorist group’s blockade, leading to disruptions in daily activities such as the closure of educational institutions in the capital, Bamako. Mali’s reliance on neighboring countries like Senegal and Ivory Coast for fuel imports due to its landlocked status exacerbates the impact of such blockades.
Despite the military’s takeover in 2021 with promises of enhanced security, the persistent jihadist insurgency in Mali continues to challenge government control, particularly in the northern and eastern regions. Concerns over the deteriorating security situation and its humanitarian implications have been raised by Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, the chairperson of the African Union commission, denouncing attacks on civilians and the resultant instability.
