Psychiatric Nurse Accused of Assaulting Teen Patient

Allegations have surfaced that a mental health nurse sexually assaulted a teenage patient at the hospital where he was employed, reportedly entering her room multiple times in one night.

Michael Cabanalan, aged 35, faces charges of second-degree rape and other sexual offenses for the alleged assault on a 17-year-old at a psychiatric facility in Baltimore County, United States. According to authorities, Cabanalan solicited the victim’s phone number and Instagram details on September 4 before he was seen entering her room without surveillance cameras and purportedly committing the assault.

Authorities mentioned that the victim, due to mental disabilities, was incapable of providing consent. Following the incident, the teenager was discharged on September 8, only to be picked up by Cabanalan from her residence.

Subsequently, Cabanalan allegedly brought the teenager to his home, where she was reportedly sexually assaulted twice. The victim’s absence from her home was noticed by her mother, who traced her location using an app.

Upon confrontation by her mother, the teen disclosed the rape and assault incidents. The mother then reported the matter to Child Protective Services, who in turn informed the authorities and the Sheppard Pratt hospital on September 11.

In response to the allegations, Sheppard Pratt initially suspended Cabanalan and later terminated his employment. Baltimore County Police arrested him on October 21.

In a statement to CBS Baltimore, Sheppard Pratt emphasized their commitment to the safety of individuals under their care. They affirmed prompt reporting to authorities upon learning of the allegations and cooperation with ongoing investigations.

Cabanalan is currently detained without bond at the Baltimore County Detention Center. Baltimore Country Police Department encourages potential victims or anyone with relevant information to come forward and assist in the investigation.
