Network Rail has unveiled alarming CCTV footage depicting a heedless teenager endangering their life by engaging in a dangerous game of ‘playing chicken’ at a level crossing, narrowly avoiding a high-speed train at the last moment. This video, recorded at a level crossing north of Diss station in Norfolk, serves as a stark reminder during the school holidays about the perils of railway trespassing for young individuals.
According to Network Rail, trains can reach speeds of up to 100mph on the section of track where the teenager was observed on CCTV. Shenel Bullock, the health and safety manager for Network Rail Anglia, emphasized the grave risks associated with such behavior, cautioning against activities like taking selfies, filming dances, or playing games near level crossings due to the potentially fatal consequences. Bullock urged vigilance, strict adherence to safety protocols, and respect for warning signs, barriers, and alarms when near railway crossings.
Matthew Wakefield, the safety, security, and sustainability director at Greater Anglia, reiterated the paramount importance of safety on the railway, highlighting the severe outcomes that can result from stepping onto the tracks. He emphasized the need for alertness, care, and compliance with safety regulations near railway areas, emphasizing that fast trains require significant stopping distances. Wakefield urged the public to prioritize safety, follow crossing rules diligently, proceed with caution, and avoid taking unnecessary risks near railway infrastructure.
