A tragic incident unfolded as a father lost his life in a car crash while being pursued by the police, shortly after the search for him had been halted. Jeremiah Hines, who had left his home in Ilkeston to grab snacks from Tesco for a movie night on the evening of September 22, met with the fatal accident. The following morning, his body was discovered by a dog walker at Shipley Country Park.
Even after more than a month, uncertainties persist regarding the circumstances surrounding his demise, which is currently being probed by Derbyshire Constabulary. The impact of his passing has been profound, especially on his girlfriend Sophie Scott, their 15-month-old son Daenerys, and their unborn second child.
Expressing her grief, Ms. Scott remarked, “It’s unbelievable that he’s no longer with us. That single pursuit has altered the lives of two babies and mine forever.” She criticized the police’s handling of the search for Mr. Hines after he fled into the woods following the crash on Church Street. Officers, who were chasing him due to his uninsured Mercedes, scoured the area for about an hour and a half with the aid of a drone and a canine unit.
Detective Constable Danielle Pimborough suggested that Mr. Hines may have passed away shortly after the search, which was impeded by the late hour. Ms. Scott has raised concerns about the effectiveness and duration of the search, believing that prompt action by the police could have saved her partner.
Heartbroken, she stated, “It pains me to think that he was alone all night. That just adds to the sorrow. He could have been rescued and not suffered alone.”
According to Ms. Scott, Mr. Hines was found not far from where the vehicle crashed, indicating he did not travel a significant distance post-accident. She shared, “If he had hidden, he would have called me. He was aware I was pregnant with a child at home.”
Ms. Scott, who is 17 weeks pregnant, received the news of her partner’s demise in the early hours of September 23, more than a day after he had left home. She initially thought he might have been detained but was shattered upon receiving a distressing call from Mr. Hines’ mother.
While the cause of Mr. Hines’ death remains undetermined, Ms. Scott revealed that he had suffered a fractured nose and teeth, in addition to cuts, bruises, and brain trauma. She believes that past mistreatment of Mr. Hines by the authorities influenced his decision to flee from the police on the night of his demise.
Having served a prison term for drug-related offenses at 17, Mr. Hines had turned his life around and was preparing to work as a railway engineer. Ms. Scott disclosed that he had spent eight months in jail due to an erroneous prison recall, a decision criticized as “inappropriate” by a magistrate.
Describing Mr. Hines as a transformed individual who aspired to build a family, Ms. Scott emphasized his nurturing and humorous nature. She expressed, “He was a guardian and a breadwinner. He was an excellent father and partner. He was jovial and mischievous. He was remarkable.”
The Derbyshire Police spokesperson confirmed that an investigation was initiated into Mr. Hines’ death and was referred to the IOPC. The IOPC subsequently returned the case to the local authorities for further investigation. The inquiry is ongoing, with updates provided to Mr. Hines’ family.
An IOPC representative stated that they were informed by Derbyshire Constabulary about Mr. Hines’ demise at Shipley Country Park, likely linked to a police pursuit in Ilkeston the previous evening. Following an evaluation, it was decided that a local investigation by Derbyshire Constabulary was warranted.
In light of these events, Ms. Scott has called for improved police practices to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
