“Women’s Health Crisis: Delayed Diagnoses, Prolonged Suffering”

For years, women have been dismissed by doctors when seeking help for severe period pains and heavy bleeding. Many of these women suffer from conditions like endometriosis or fibroids, which often go undiagnosed.

A recent survey I conducted revealed heartbreaking experiences from women, highlighting a lack of awareness, repeated misdiagnoses, and a concerning lack of urgency in addressing women’s health concerns.

Statistics show that one in ten women have endometriosis, affecting women across all sectors of society. However, the average wait time for a diagnosis is now nine years and four months, with Black women and those from other ethnic backgrounds waiting even longer due to dismissive attitudes towards their pain.

If one in ten men faced similar health challenges, the response would likely be more efficient and compassionate. Unfortunately, women often endure prolonged suffering without adequate support or recognition.

Personal accounts from the survey illustrate the struggles faced by women seeking diagnosis and treatment for conditions they knew little about until they were affected by them.

While progress has been made in raising awareness, there is still work to be done in improving the diagnosis and management of gynecological conditions like endometriosis. Initiatives like including menopause questions in health checks and addressing long waiting lists are steps in the right direction.

This International Women’s Day coincides with Endometriosis Action Month, underscoring the need to break taboos and openly discuss women’s health issues. Advocacy efforts in Parliament aim to prompt action from policymakers and healthcare providers to prioritize timely and accurate diagnoses for women’s health conditions.

Addressing endometriosis is not just a medical concern but a matter of social justice, rectifying historical injustices faced by women seeking proper healthcare. Swift and equitable treatment for endometriosis aligns with the core values of ensuring healthcare equality and justice for all women.
