A theft incident involving a stolen plane occurred at a flight school that ended in a crash at a major airport in Los Angeles.
The unauthorized taking of a single-engine Cessna from Van Nuys Airport took place early Thursday, resulting in the aircraft crashing into a building. Shocking visuals captured the plane plunging nose-first into the structure, causing significant damage to the hangar. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) reported the collision occurred around 5 am local time.
Law enforcement officers from the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) and the FBI swiftly responded to the scene. Subsequently, a suspect was apprehended on suspicion of burglary and aircraft theft, as stated by the LAPD. The extent of any injuries from the crash remains unclear, and it is unknown if additional suspects are being pursued.
According to reports from KTLA, the stolen plane is believed to have been taken from a flight training facility near Balboa Boulevard. The FBI disclosed that the plane was not airborne but was taxiing on the ground when it collided with the hangar. The aircraft was later removed and secured inside the flight academy.
An investigative inquiry into the incident has been initiated by the FAA. A spokesperson mentioned that the investigation is in its preliminary stages, with details subject to change.
