Donald Trump has announced an extensive escalation in his strategy for mass deportations, including legal immigrants, in reaction to the recent shooting incident in Washington DC.
The assault, resulting in the death of one National Guard member and leaving another critically injured, was reportedly carried out by Rahmanullah Lakanwal, an Afghan national who entered the US after the fall of Kabul in 2021. Lakanwal sought asylum last year and was granted it in April, following Trump’s return to office.
Trump has placed blame on his predecessor, Joe Biden, for allowing thousands of Afghans to seek refuge in the US after the Taliban’s rise to power. In a series of late-night social media posts on Truth Social, Trump confirmed his response would not solely target those involved in the shooting but would extend to any migrant group he believes is undermining the country.
In his statements, Trump emphasized the need for “REVERSE MIGRATION” as a solution. He also expressed Thanksgiving wishes while excluding those he perceives as threats to American values.
Targeting the Somali community in Minnesota, Trump announced a temporary halt on migration from specific regions, during which individuals deemed detrimental to the US would be removed. He declared the termination of federal benefits for non-citizens and warned that even citizens could face status revocation if they disrupt domestic peace.
Furthermore, Trump revealed plans to broaden mass deportations to include any foreign national considered a burden, security risk, or incompatible with Western civilization. He clarified that even individuals with permanent residency status, such as green card holders, would not be exempt.
In a lengthy discourse, Trump criticized the US for being overly politically correct regarding immigration. He claimed that a significant portion of foreign-born residents in the US are reliant on welfare or have criminal backgrounds, assertions that contradict established research showing lower incarceration rates among immigrants compared to native-born individuals.
Disparaging Minnesota Governor Tim Walz for the Somali population in the state, Trump’s remarks were misleading as Somalis constitute a small fraction of the overall population. He also launched personal attacks on Congresswoman Ilhan Omar, falsely accusing her of illegal entry into the US and other derogatory claims.
Contrary to Trump’s allegations, Omar legally sought asylum with her family in 1995 and became a US citizen in 2000. The accusations made against her lack factual basis.
