During the trial of Julia Wandelt, the alleged stalker of Madeleine McCann’s parents, it was revealed that she accused Kate McCann of withholding information from the police. Wandelt, a 24-year-old from Lubin, Poland, is facing accusations of impersonating Madeleine McCann and stalking the McCann family through various means such as emails, phone calls, voicemails, and visits.
While giving her testimony at Leicester Crown Court, Wandelt expressed disbelief at being in the witness box, claiming innocence and questioning why Kate McCann did not disclose more information about their interactions. She alleged that McCann deliberately concealed details related to their communication, including voicemails discussing Wandelt’s supposed memories.
Prosecutor Michael Duck KC questioned Wandelt about her unwanted advances towards the McCanns, to which she defended her actions by stating that she believed her efforts were in pursuit of finding a missing child. Wandelt suggested that the lack of response from the McCanns might have been due to external threats they faced.
Wandelt admitted to sending accusatory messages to Kate McCann out of frustration and emotional distress, clarifying that she regretted those actions and did not truly believe the accusations she made. She also mentioned an incident involving a friend acting aggressively towards McCann, attributing it to heightened emotions.
Regarding financial assistance offered for a DNA test, Wandelt explained her intention to use the results for legal proceedings in a family court. Both Wandelt and her co-defendant, Karen Spragg, deny the charge of stalking.
The trial is ongoing, with further proceedings expected.
