“Disabled Persons Railcard Expanded: More Eligible, More Savings”

Starting today, more individuals are now eligible for a Disabled Persons Railcard, including Blue Badge holders. The criteria for qualifying for the railcard has been expanded to cover a wider range of visible and invisible disabilities.

With a Disabled Persons Railcard, passengers can enjoy a 1/3 discount on rail fares, resulting in an average annual savings of approximately £126. The cost of the railcard is £20 for one year or £54 for three years. To discover more tips for saving money on transportation, visit this link.

The existing eligibility criteria remain in effect, ensuring that individuals meeting specific conditions are entitled to a Disabled Persons Railcard.

The expansion of the eligibility criteria for the railcard was initially announced in November 2025, with further extensions planned for September 2026. The upcoming expansion later this year will encompass certain long-term or degenerative medical conditions and forms of neurodiversity that significantly impact a person’s ability to travel by train.

Jacqueline Starr, Executive Chair and CEO at Rail Delivery Group, emphasized the importance of broadening the railcard eligibility to facilitate more individuals in accessing rail services with confidence. Rail Minister, Lord Hendy, highlighted the significance of the railcard expansion in creating a more inclusive railway, making everyday journeys more affordable for a larger segment of the population and enhancing accessibility through the Accessible Railways Roadmap under Great British Railways.
