Rachel Reeves has rebutted allegations of breaking manifesto commitments and directed a sharp criticism towards Nigel Farage. The Chancellor engaged in a series of challenging interviews to justify her contentious choice to extend the freeze on income tax thresholds until 2031, resulting in over 1.5 million individuals facing tax hikes due to increasing wages.
Prior to the General Election, Labour assured not to raise taxes for working individuals, and Ms. Reeves had previously expressed disapproval of threshold freezes. She strongly responded to Nigel Farage’s assertion that the Budget was an attack on aspiration, affirming that the government supports aspiration. Furthermore, in reaction to the imprisonment of former Reform Welsh leader Nathan Gill for accepting Russian bribes, Ms. Reeves urged Mr. Farage to concentrate on preventing further traitors in his party.
Following the Budget announcement, Ms. Reeves faced intense questioning on various broadcast interviews regarding whether she had violated Labour’s manifesto pledge. Susanna Reid from GMB challenged her on the matter, questioning her credibility. Ms. Reeves defended her actions by emphasizing the necessity to adapt to changing circumstances globally, mentioning that she had alleviated the financial burden on the public through various measures.
Despite rumors suggesting a potential income tax rate increase, Ms. Reeves did not implement one in the Budget. Nonetheless, economists argue that neglecting to adjust thresholds effectively equates to a tax increase on working people. Ben Zaranko from the Institute for Fiscal Studies criticized the move, labeling it as a tax hike on the working population.
When confronted by Sky News host Sophy Ridge with the manifesto pledge, Ms. Reeves acknowledged that working people would be contributing more due to the extended threshold freeze. She emphasized her efforts to minimize the impact on individuals.
Expressing pride in her Budget, Ms. Reeves highlighted her commitment to improving the lives of ordinary individuals from working-class backgrounds. She affirmed her dedication to delivering future budgets aimed at bolstering the economy and enhancing financial well-being for working people.
