A recent report by consumer group Which? revealed that despite the widespread usage of the major mobile networks EE, Vodafone, Three, and O2, they are falling short in terms of overall performance compared to their smaller competitors. The study, based on feedback from over 5,000 smartphone users across the country, indicated that lesser-known networks generally offer better value and superior customer service.
The survey aimed to assess how well providers are meeting customer expectations, with results indicating that the prominent “Big Four” mobile operators are trailing behind numerous smaller rivals. Talkmobile emerged as the top performer in the rankings, closely followed by Tesco Mobile, Giffgaff, and SMARTY. Among the major providers, EE achieved the highest ranking, securing the ninth spot, while O2 and Three were among the lowest-rated networks.
One of the key findings highlighted in the report was the significant price difference between the major networks and the smaller operators. Customers on the Big Four networks typically paid an average of £16 per month for a SIM-only plan, whereas users on smaller networks paid as little as £9 per month for similar services. Despite the lower prices offered by smaller providers, the report emphasized that coverage quality remains comparable, as many of them utilize the infrastructure of major networks.
The study also revealed that switching mobile providers is easier than many consumers realize, with some individuals being able to transition within 10 minutes. One respondent shared their positive experience of swiftly switching from O2 to a more affordable SMARTY plan, saving approximately £200 annually.
Natalie Hitchins, Head of Home Products and Services at Which?, noted that smaller mobile providers consistently outshine larger firms by offering better customer service and more cost-effective deals. She encouraged customers nearing the end of their contracts to consider switching to providers that offer better value and service quality. The full scores from Which? rankings showed Talkmobile leading with 83%, followed by Tesco Mobile (81%), Giffgaff (79%), SMARTY (79%), and Voxi (79%), among others.
