A father in Offaly, Ireland, has been sentenced to 12 years in prison for raping and threatening to harm his daughter. The man, aged 51, was found guilty of physically and sexually abusing his daughter from the age of five to thirteen. The abuse included multiple counts of rape and oral rape between 2012 and 2020.
The daughter, now 19 years old, revealed in court the horrific details of the abuse she endured, which started when her parents separated. She described how her father would compare her to her mother before assaulting her. The abuse also involved physical violence, with the man slapping her during the rapes on several occasions.
The victim, who suffered mental anguish and thoughts of suicide from a young age, finally disclosed the abuse to her mother after enduring threats from her father. The man had warned he would harm her younger sister and the family if she spoke out. The abuse took place repeatedly, with the girl recalling the painful experiences in various locations, including sheds on the man’s property.
Despite the trauma, the victim kept the abuse hidden to protect her loved ones. It wasn’t until later in life that she confided in a friend and eventually informed her mother about the abuse. The man was arrested in 2023 and denied any wrongdoing, claiming nothing had happened. However, his daughter’s courage in speaking out led to his conviction and a 12-year jail sentence.
The court also ordered the man to be under the supervision of Ireland’s Probation Service for three years upon release, with strict restrictions on contacting his daughters or their mother. Despite the immense suffering she endured, the victim emphasized her resilience and determination to overcome the trauma inflicted by her father, stating that her kindness and love cannot be taken away by him.
Mr. Justice Paul McDermott handed down the sentence, ensuring that the man faces consequences for his heinous actions.
