Asda has been penalized with a fine of £500,000 for selling expired food at one of its supermarkets in the UK. The Barnsley branch was found to have items more than two weeks past their sell-by date, including hummus that was 16 days expired. Additionally, pizzas and curries were also discovered to be out of date during an investigation by the Barnsley Council Trading Standards team.
The supermarket chain, Asda, admitted to five violations under the Food Safety Act and was directed to pay £507,767 in fines and costs on January 29. As a response, Asda has implemented new procedures to check product dates in all its stores.
A spokesperson from the Barnsley Trading Standards stated that despite improvements made post these incidents, such as new checking systems and enhanced store audits, the substantial fine of £100,000 per violation signifies the consequences of non-compliance.
