A young lady shouted six chilling words before gouging out her own eyes outside a church. Today marks Kaylee Muthart’s 28th birthday, a day she will celebrate without the gift of sight.
At the age of 20, Kaylee permanently lost her vision during a meth-induced psychotic episode, where she believed that self-harm would bring her closer to a higher power and save the world. Diagnosed with bipolar disorder, she spiraled into darkness after using meth-laced substances following a distressing breakup and mental collapse.
In a drug-induced state on February 6, Kaylee, still in a delusion, felt compelled to sacrifice her eyes to prevent a catastrophic event. As she mutilated herself, she cried out, “I want to see the light!” Her eyeballs were removed by the time she was restrained and rushed to the hospital for surgery.
Despite her tragic ordeal, Kaylee, now residing in Florida, has shown resilience and faith. She adapted to life without sight, attending blind school, earning her high school diploma, and mastering skills like braille and assistive technologies for communication.
Reflecting on her journey, Kaylee shared her thoughts on the possibility of regaining sight one day, expressing a desire to witness moments she has missed since losing her vision. She acknowledged the challenges of explaining her visual experiences post-blindness but finds solace in her past memories of sight.
Kaylee now wears prosthetic eyes and views her blindness as a blessing that safeguards her from relapsing into drug addiction. She believes that being blind is a preferable outcome compared to the destructive path she was on before.
