The daughter of a woman tragically found deceased on a remote island following a cruise ship departure has expressed her sorrow. Suzanne Rees, 80, was discovered deceased on Lizard Island after the Coral Adventurer cruise ship left without her and other passengers. Ms. Rees, a solo traveler, was found dead after wandering off during a hiking excursion on the island.
An investigation is now underway to determine the circumstances surrounding Ms. Rees’ absence from the ship and the alleged failure to conduct a passenger count before departure. Ms. Rees’ daughter, Katherine Rees, has criticized Coral Expeditions for what she perceives as a lack of care and responsibility in the incident. She emphasized the importance of understanding what actions could have potentially prevented her mother’s tragic death.
Authorities located Ms. Rees’ body the day after she went missing, indicating a fall from a cliff or slope. The police have classified the incident as a “non-suspicious death” and confirmed that a coroner will investigate further. Coral Expeditions’ CEO, Mark Fifield, stated that the company is fully cooperating with the official inquiries.
The cruise company offered their condolences to the Rees family and pledged ongoing support during this difficult time. Investigations are ongoing to determine why Ms. Rees was not properly documented during boarding procedures at Lizard Island. Additional inquiries are being conducted by maritime safety authorities and workplace safety regulators to understand the circumstances surrounding this tragic event.
