NATO forces successfully downed an unidentified drone near a US military base in Estonia, situated close to Russia. The incident occurred at Camp Reedo, a US Army Europe and Africa base, just under 30 miles from the Russian border. The drone was observed hovering near the base, and one of the two drones in the area was shot down, although the involvement of US forces remains uncertain. This event, which took place on October 17, was recently disclosed.
Tensions have been escalating due to Russia’s activities in the region, prompting calls for a stronger response. Estonian Defence Forces headquarters spokesperson, Liis Vaksmann, confirmed the detection of drones near the 2nd Infantry Brigade’s base and the subsequent shooting down of one drone using an anti-drone rifle.
Despite efforts by Estonian military and police to locate the downed drone, it remains missing. In a separate incident, three Russian MiG-31 fighters breached Estonian airspace over the Gulf of Finland for a brief period. Estonia is considered one of NATO’s most vulnerable members facing potential Russian aggression. British troops have been stationed in Estonia since 2017 as part of a multinational effort to deter Russian hostilities.
The Reedo base is home to the US Army’s 5th Squadron, 7th Cavalry Regiment, an armored reconnaissance unit. Estonian Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna emphasized the need for NATO to be prepared to intercept and bring down unauthorized aircraft to protect sovereign airspace.
Recent developments in Ukraine saw significant strikes on Russian targets overnight, causing substantial damage to oil and petrochemical facilities. Various locations, including an oil depot in Crimea and refineries in Russia, were targeted, leading to disruptions in petrol supply and price increases. Both countries have engaged in retaliatory strikes, resulting in damage to critical infrastructure.
The series of attacks highlight the escalating tensions in the region, with both sides resorting to strategic strikes to assert control and retaliate against perceived threats. The situation underscores the importance of maintaining security and stability in the face of ongoing geopolitical challenges.
