A former chief constable, Paul Anderson, has been officially cleared of all allegations of gross misconduct following an inquiry by the police oversight body. Anderson, who retired from leading Humberside Police last year, was accused of making offensive and discriminatory comments. However, the Independent Office for Police Conduct has found no wrongdoing and confirmed in a letter to Anderson that there is no case against him.
In response to the investigation’s findings, Anderson expressed his delight at being completely vindicated and stated that no further action will be taken. It is common practice for chief constables to be referred to the IOPC for misconduct cases, while lower-ranking officers are usually investigated by their respective police forces.
With a 34-year career in policing, Anderson joined Humberside Police as an assistant chief constable in 2019 and played a pivotal role in elevating the force to one of the top performers in the country, as recognized by HM Inspectorate of Constabulary.
Meanwhile, another police chief, Nick Adderley from Northamptonshire Police, is facing charges of fraud and misconduct in public office. Adderley, 59, is accused of lying about his military background, specifically falsely claiming to have been a former Lieutenant Commander in the Royal Navy from 2018 to 2024. He is also alleged to have misrepresented his service in the Falklands War and his entitlement to wear associated service medals on his uniform.
Following an independent investigation by the IOPC, Adderley has been charged this month and is scheduled to appear in Westminster Magistrates’ Court on November 10. Prosecutors have deemed there to be sufficient evidence to pursue criminal proceedings against Adderley, emphasizing that it is in the public interest to do so.
