A newly developed Russian nuclear weapon, known as a flying Chernobyl, has raised concerns as President Donald Trump issued a stern warning to Russian leader Vladimir Putin. Putin has described the missile as unbeatable and issued a direct threat to the UK following confirmation of Russia’s successful testing of the new missile, which is propelled by nuclear power and boasts an unlimited range.
The missile, named 9M730 Burevestnik and referred to as SSC-X-9 Skyfall by NATO, underwent testing last Tuesday. Putin proudly declared Russia’s possession of the most advanced nuclear forces globally over the weekend, highlighting a recent secret flight test of the Burevestnik missile, which he described as having an unlimited range. In response, President Trump criticized Putin for diverting attention from resolving the ongoing conflict in Ukraine by focusing on missile testing.
Putin emphasized the missile’s capabilities during a speech at a military command post, stating that it traveled 8,700 miles during the test and remained airborne for approximately 15 hours. He emphasized the uniqueness of the weapon, dubbed the Flying Chernobyl, and its nuclear-powered propulsion system with no equivalent in other nations.
Despite challenges faced during earlier trials, Putin announced that the missile has now overcome these obstacles and is nearing deployment readiness. The weapon’s potential deployment has heightened global tensions, especially as conflicts in Ukraine persist. Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk has warned that the UK could be at risk if Russia were to attack a NATO member, criticizing the lack of public concern regarding national security threats posed by Russia.
Tusk expressed concerns about potential Russian aggression, including the deployment of hypersonic Oreshnik ballistic missiles in strategic locations. He highlighted the need for vigilance and readiness to respond to any potential threats posed by Russia. Meanwhile, recent attacks in Kyiv resulting in casualties have further escalated tensions in the region, underlining the volatile geopolitical landscape.
