Lidl, known for its affordable groceries, is expanding its offerings by entering the mobile phone market with budget-friendly plans. To access these deals, customers will need a Lidl Plus account. This move is part of a significant £600 million investment by the supermarket chain, which also includes the opening of 50 new stores nationwide.
Following the footsteps of other non-traditional competitors like Revolut and Klarna, Lidl aims to provide cost-effective phone plans. While the service is currently available in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland, there are plans to expand to the UK, US, France, and Spain in the future.
Lidl will operate as a Mobile Virtual Network Operator (MVNO) through a partnership with 1GLOBAL communications provider, leveraging existing infrastructure for its mobile services. In addition to its telecom venture, Lidl is set to open over 50 new stores in various locations across the UK, creating 2,000 job opportunities.
The supermarket chain’s CEO, Ryan McDonnell, emphasized the positive impact of these expansions on local communities and suppliers. Schwarz Group, Lidl’s parent company, will also acquire a 9.9% stake in 1GLOBAL, enhancing its presence in the digital space and signaling further growth in the technology sector.
This strategic move by Lidl could disrupt traditional telecom providers by offering competitive pricing and enhancing convenience for consumers. Employment minister Kate Dearden praised the initiative for creating quality jobs and contributing to community development.
