The Ministry of Justice faces a crisis as two inmates were mistakenly released from the same prison within days. Brahim Kaddour-Cherif, a registered sex offender, was erroneously freed from HMP Wandsworth, and it took six days before the authorities were notified. Additionally, William Smith, a fraudster, was also released from the same facility due to a mix-up in court records.
Both men are now subjects of police manhunts following the errors that occurred shortly after another inmate, Hadush Kebatu, was mistakenly released from HMP Chelmsford. Deputy Prime Minister David Lammy, who also serves as Justice Secretary, expressed his outrage over Kaddour-Cherif’s release, highlighting systemic issues within the criminal justice system.
Kaddour-Cherif, an Algerian national, had been in the deportation process before disappearing. He had a history of overstaying in the UK and was involved in various criminal activities, including burglary and indecent exposure. Despite efforts to apprehend him earlier, the release mishap allowed him to evade authorities.
The mix-up also led to the premature release of Smith, who was serving a 45-month sentence for fraud. A confusion in court records resulted in his incorrect release, highlighting administrative lapses within the justice system. The subsequent attempts to rectify the error were unsuccessful, leading to Smith’s premature freedom.
Authorities are actively seeking both individuals, emphasizing the importance of public cooperation in their apprehension. The incidents have raised concerns about the effectiveness of the current justice system, prompting calls for improved oversight and accountability.
