In a horrifying incident of child abuse, a 10-year-old girl was strangled and dismembered on her birthday, with her remains set on fire.
The victim, Victoria Martens, was found at her mother’s residence in 2018 after police responded to a 911 call reporting a domestic dispute. An autopsy revealed that Victoria had been sexually abused. Her mother, Michelle, along with her boyfriend Fabian Gonzales and his cousin Jessica Kelley, were arrested and charged with multiple offenses including first-degree murder, child abuse, kidnapping, and tampering with evidence.
Although all three initially pleaded not guilty, Michelle later admitted to one count of child abuse resulting in death. She initially claimed Victoria was given alcohol and drugs to sedate her for sexual purposes, but subsequent investigations found only alcohol in the victim’s system. Allegations suggest that Michelle witnessed Gonzales raping and murdering her daughter, with Kelley also implicated in the dismemberment.
Legal proceedings revealed conflicting statements and defenses from the accused. Gonzales denied any involvement in the girl’s death, while Michelle’s attorney found certain autopsy results beneficial to their defense. Court documents indicated Michelle’s involvement in seeking men online to abuse her daughter.
Gonzales and Kelley’s trials were postponed to 2022, with Gonzales ultimately convicted of child abuse resulting in death and tampering with evidence. He received a 37-and-a-half-year prison sentence. Michelle, on the other hand, served 12 years but was released in October. Kelley, after pleading guilty to various charges, was sentenced to 44 years, with expectations of early release.
The tragic case highlighted the severe nature of child abuse and the legal complexities surrounding the investigation and prosecution of the perpetrators.
