U.S. President Donald Trump has directed the Pentagon to reduce scheduled joint military exercises with South Korea. Trump cited the exercises’ cost and their perceived hostility toward North Korea, which he described as non-threatening and respectful during his tenure. Trump made the decision despite it being too late to cancel, instructing Secretary of War Pete Hegseth to significantly scale back the drills.
This move is not unprecedented, as Trump had previously sought to halt these exercises during his first term, labeling them as provocative. While South Korea’s Defence Ministry confirmed that the exercises proceeded as planned, the country’s presidential Blue House stated that it is reviewing Trump’s directive. The Blue House expressed hope that the amicable relationship between the U.S. and North Korean leaders would facilitate constructive dialogue for peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula.
In response to Trump’s assertion that South Korea declined to support U.S. efforts to denuclearize Iran, Seoul mentioned ongoing discussions regarding potential military contributions and defense readiness in the region. Trump’s decision has drawn criticism, with Democratic Sen. Mark Kelly condemning the move as shortsighted and erroneous. The joint exercises, involving 18,000 South Korean soldiers, were intended to enhance readiness against North Korean threats.
While the U.S. military emphasized the exercises’ role in regional peace and security, the drills coincided with North Korea’s resumption of ballistic missile testing, violating UN regulations. North Korea condemned the exercises as preparations for aggression, warning of severe repercussions. The regime’s aggressive stance follows a period of heightened nuclear and missile development efforts since Kim Jong-un’s negotiations with Trump collapsed in 2019.
Despite these tensions, Trump has indicated interest in resuming discussions with North Korea following his past meetings with Kim. The U.S. president’s decision to curtail joint exercises with South Korea aligns with his administration’s efforts to prioritize diplomatic engagements with North Korea over military exercises.
